Day 5: 31 Day Challenge – Reconstructed Sweater

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

When I was young I used to spend a lot of time watching old movies.  Sometimes I paid attention to the plot and other times I focused purely on the fashion.  I have had a thing for retro with a modern spin for most of my life.  Melding old and new to make something really original excites me.  Making a traditional gown out of un-traditional materials or maybe using a classic neckline with a very modern cut and lines or something like that.  I think you can see this in my design style.

In the last year or so I have started to see my reconstructed designs taking a direction that I hadn’t planned on.  I think they are sort of futuristic.  Years ago I joked with my friends that if the world got too awful to continue living this country (on the grid) we could all go live in caves, off the grid and if I planned right and got a treadle sewing machine I would make uniforms for our people.  I think my new work reflects that look.  If we had to live in caves and only had the materials we walked into the cave with what would our attire be?  We, I’m thinking this would be just one of the futuristic, cave dweller fashion statements.

Day 5: Reconstructed Sweater

Phew!  This one took longer than I expected – maybe 4 hours?  But, I actually have a couple of sweater patterns that I worked out in that amount of time.  When creativity strikes you must follow it, so I did.  Better late than never!

I make a lot of reconstructed sweaters although not in this particular style and not for myself.  I really like this.  What do you think?

In case you didn’t read my first blog post about this project . . . this post is part of a 31 day challenge I am doing to bring more creativity, stories and solutions to my life.  I have been using my creativity almost exclusively for work in the recent past and for the month of January I will creating things for my personal life, talking about them and taking pictures.  I would love input from readers as to which project you enjoy the most and if I get enough comments on one particular project I’ll turn it into a tutorial after the 31 day challenge of crafting, stories and solutions is over.  So please let me know what you like!
